One Of Richmond's Finest
Harmony of Virginia, LLC was founded in April of 1999 by the harpist and owner Shelley Greene. Ms. Greene's musical journey began at the age of 8 as a member of the Richmond (VA) Public Schools' Harp Ensemble, one of only a few publicly-funded harp programs in the United States. She continued participating in this program throughout elementary, middle, and high school. Upon graduation from high school, Ms. Greene was awarded a 4-year merit scholarship to the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music, a specialized institution of learning under the Johns Hopkins University umbrella. She was the first African-American woman to earn a Bachelor of Music Degree in Harp Performance from the school. Ms. Greene, a strong advocate of music education, began her professional career by teaching privately, performing on the East Coast, and through her employment by Richmond Public Schools as a Music Educator. Her deep commitment to music education and passion for performing led to her recruitment by the historic Virginia Union University to design and develop a degree program in harp performance. Ms. Greene was subsequently hired by the university to serve as Adjunct Professor of Harp, Piano, Music History and Music Appreciation. Her lifelong love of music education prompted Ms. Greene to return to school where she studied Orchestral Repertoire for the Harp at Rice University. She later earned a Master of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University. Ms. Greene continues to perform and advocate for music and fine arts education in communities where children do not typically have opportunities for exposure to such study.
